The problem here is the Compute Card was killed before one could meaningfully upgrade the internals of hardware using it. What commitment is there Intel won't do the same for the NUC Compute Element? Putting the NUC brand on it doesn't change that you need a commitment to the form factor for people to buy into it.

I have (2) 3rd gen Intel i5 NUC's. They do not contain internal IR support, so I use external USB compatible IR receivers. I run Libreelec 8.2.5 on both NUC's. I also run Kodi on (2) Windows 10 desktops for testing only. One Windows 10 desktop is also the file server for my gigabit wired network.
The NUC in the interim is repurposed as a headless NextCloud server and has been a stable server for a good year or more now as well. Happy with it in a headless role, but I don't want to put it into service with a come and go display device ever again ;-). I wish I had a better story to share and some solid advice.
